This training is designed like any good story - in three acts.
Act 1 - Mobile Journalism
Act 2 - User-centered design
Act 3 - Social media storytelling

This is an immersive training course in mastering the art and craft of identifying and telling amazing non-fiction stories. We are also including an intermediate level course on video storytelling using the latest pro mobile app - Lumafusion. This module is a game changer.

You will first learn picture language (the grammar of film of video), as well as how to produce broadcast-quality reports. They you will then learn how to develop solid action plans with your teams to identify, build and test concepts for new story formats, services and products.

And through a series of practical projects, case studies with media companies and clear demonstrations, you gain confidence and capacity to tell many types of stories and the strategies for making them resonate with your audience. You will learn how to organize storyboards and social media outreach to share compelling and persuasive stories that can have measurable impact.

Smart Film School


Robb Montgomery is a professor of mobile journalism and the author of Smartphone Video Storytelling (Routledge – New York & London). He is an award-winning documentary filmmaker and former newspaper editor (Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune).

He teaches the certificate course in Digital Storytelling for the public information officers of the United Nations and trains reporters from CNN, The New York Times, Reuters, Channel News Asia, Belgian Public Television, Russ Media, Al Jazeera, and Singapore Press Holdings. 

In 2011 he developed the mobile journalism training program for Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty and has trained more than 20,000 storytellers in mobile video methods.

He holds a b.a. in Journalism (1990 - Eastern Illinois University).
